Dong-hyun Cho, North Korean escapee born in the 1980’s, and Beom-jin Wu, South Korean native born in the 1980’s, meet each other at Daehakro Arts Theater in 2019!

About the performance

Dong-hyun Cho was born in 1984 in North Korea. Gone through hard times in adolescence, Cho finally reached the South through China. Beom-jin Wu was born in 1983 in Jecheon City, Northern Chungcheong Province, South Korea. Raised in the city, Wu came to Seoul in his 20’s and started his career as an actor. In the theater, these two men meet. They tell a story of their country, people and thoughts on their existence in diverse forms under the process of getting to know each other.

Synopsis

Dong-hyun Choi, North Korean escapee from North Hamgyeong Province, and Beom-jin Wu, actor from North Chuncheong Province, South Korea, meet on a stage in Seoul in 2019. The two men ask themselves if they could be called one nation or people. In this way, they trace back their identity in a theatrical form, in an attempt to confirm or demonstrate it.

Creative VaQi

Creative VaQi was founded in 2008. The Company’s name ‘VaQi’ means ‘wheel,’ as its Korean pronunciation is similar to that of ‘wheel.’ It is also the abbreviation of ‘Veritas, art, Question and imagination.’ Willing to traveling around the world like a wheel and to share the beauty with people everywhere, the Company pursues performances using materials of diverse genres such as objets, bodies, media and installation art, rather than presenting text-oriented plays. The Company won the ‘Goblin Award’ at the 2009 Chuncheon International Mime Festival, the ‘Award for a Play of a New Concept’ at the 47th Dong-A Theater Awards. The Company was also selected as one of the three best plays of the year by the Korean Critics Association in 2014 and 2015. Their performances have been presented at international festivals and theaters in Germany, the UK, Japan, China, Australia and Hong Kong.

    A director who comes up with new esthetic strategies, expressing contemporary issues with theatrical language

    Founding Creative VaQi with collaborating artists in 2008, Kyung-sung Lee has served as a director and performing arts writer. Going beyond theatrical space and text-based plays, Lee has collaborated with the artists specializing in media, installation art and dance. He has also attempted to present performances in daily spaces such as abandoned buildings, squares and crosswalks. His representative works include Namsan Documenta, Before After, Working Holiday and Love Story. He was designated to the artistic director of the Seoul Marginal Theatre Festival in 2015. Lee currently serves as a professor at the theatre department of Sungkyunkwan University.
