Wall Street in New York in the 19th century, a lawyer’s office always at a shortage of hands is joined by ’Bartleby,’ a person with a peculiar aura, as a scrivener*. From the first day of work, Bartleby copies an amazing number of documents, which makes the lawyer quite satisfied.
A few days later, however, things start to go wrong when Bartleby refuses the cross-checking job that mandatorily follows transcription. Bartleby expresses his refusal to all tasks but scrivenery, by saying "I would prefer not to." His scrivener colleagues are quite outraged, but Bartleby simply adheres to his belief without flinching. And the unusual behaviors of Bartleby continue, which leads the lawyer to ask Bartleby to quit…
*Scrivener: A scrivener is a person who copied all official documents by hand when there were no photocopiers.

Synopsis
‘I would prefer not to~’
The difficulty and joy of understanding the life of someone in a fragmented society.
This piece is based on “Bartleby, the Scrivener,” a short story by Herman Melville, who is well-known for the novel Moby Dick.
Bartleby, a scrivener who copies documents by hand on Wall Street, starts to baffle the lawyer with his response: ‘I would prefer not to~’ The pansori singer, sorikkun, introduces Bartleby to the audience and asks them to think together what made Bartleby act that way. New ways to enjoy the story are facilitated using several devices, including a direct quote from the original book and portrayals of characters with objects, which are used to look at the work from various perspectives.
