 2011 Chuncheon Arts Festival

''Dreaming of a Jubilant Festival'' With the aim to distinguish the Chuncheon Arts Festival from other festivals in Korea, producers, stage staff and artists have joined hands utilizing their previous experiences on stage. Existing festivals have tended to be controlled by the intention and financial status of the performance producers. For that reason, the spirit of the festivals has not been fully explored. It is out of frustration of such reality that has brought them together.

On the premise that ‘a festival based on a horizontal relationship among those involved and the spirit of sharing’ could enrich and make the festival more enjoyable have allowed those involved to maintain a mutually-horizontal relationship to enable them to give their best to the festival. This is the underlying premise of the Chuncheon Arts Festival.

Chuncheon Arts Festival is founded on the spirit of contribution. Producers, performers and staff do not receive any remuneration for their contribution to the festival. Rather, they are eager to contribute in whatever way they can. The main aim of the festival is to enable everybody taking part from producers to the audience to gain a ‘proprietary’ share of the festival. The means to encourage active participation have earned the satisfaction of the participants which is particularly high compared to existing festivals. In addition to those involved in production, performers who have been involved in the festival express their eagerness to take part as regular contributors.

The basic spirit of the Chuncheon Arts Festival is to offer their share to the festival – stage staff and system-providers give their technical know-how and equipments, producers provide their planning and coordination skills, PR specialists are involved in promotion and marketing of the festival, while performance groups present their respective performances on stage.

In the meantime, the Children’s Hall of the City of Chuncheon, the main venue for the annual event of the Chuncehon Arts Festival, has been the host of the Chuncheon Puppet Festival, the Chuncheon International Mime Festival and the Chuncehon Jazz Festival. It was designed by the deceased Korean architect, Kim Su-Geun. It is a beautiful stage that goes well with the surrounding lake and mountain which is enough to draw exclamations from visitors. This is where the annual event is hosted. The festival that started out as an endeavor by a few who wished to create a new paradigm of culture has gained years of experience and is drawing the attention of the public.

A festival founded on the idea of sharing and contribution that brings performers and audience together, a festival where everyone is the true protagonist, a festival that is increasingly gaining a common ground. The Chuncheon Arts Festival lies at the center of the heated summer festivities in Chuncheon!
