Performing Arts Market in Seoul (PAMS) has made its comeback. Now in its 19th year, PAMS is arguably Asia's largest international performing arts platform, providing a venue for international exchange for performing arts professionals in Korea and abroad. The long-standing goal of the event is to create a sustainable distribution environment for Korean performing arts and overseas promotion through the exchange of diverse artistic ideas, contemporary issues, expertise and experience. As one of its programs, PAMS organizes 'PAMS Choice'.

PAMS Choice is PAMS' flagship program that showcases outstanding Korean performing arts works and contemporary trends of artists. It supports the presentation of outstanding works selected through a pre-submission process to help Korean performing arts organizations expand their international reach. This year, a total of 10 performing groups were selected to perform on the PAMS Choice stage. We met the teams in three genres: dance, music, and street art. The last one is street art.

Liquid Sound is an organization that collaborates with artists of various genres to create artistic works based on traditional arts. Since its founding in 2015, Liquid Sound has performed in Korea, France, and Europe with the aim of expanding the artistic scope and activities of traditional arts.

is a collaboration between Traditional performers and contemporary dancers, reinterpreting the art form in a modern way. The objects traditional entertainment, such as musical instruments, bupo, and sangmo, are worn as accessories and placed in the center of the stage like a fashion show. This allows the audience to actively enjoy the process of crossing the boundaries between tradition and modernity, traditional Korean entertainment and dance.

Q. What should we look out for on the showcase stage?
A. is, as the title suggests, a reinterpretation of traditional Korean entertainment. I believe that "excitement" and "thrill" are indispensable when talking about traditional Korean entertainment. I believe that if we focus on how these elements can be expressed in contemporary performances and how they can be interpreted by performers and contemporary dancers, we can have a deeper appreciation of the work. Liquid Sound is currently working on developing the piece into a street theater piece. We are excited to present our work at PAMS, which features international artists from various genres, including dance, theater, and street art. - Lee Inbo, Director of Liquid Sound

CCOT, Rock, Rolling

   Date: October 12 (Thu) 17:30
Venue: Cultural Plaza (National Theater of Korea)
   Genre: Street theater
   Director: Cheol-sung Lee
   Showcase Runtime: 40 minutes
   Tour Size: 4 people

CCOT is a performing arts company that pursues visual theater that integrates visual and performing arts. They create works that explore the depths of life by transforming the streets and everyday life into artistic spaces and meet the audience with the theme of "connection, not disconnection".

The street theater piece tells the story of a homeless person who is marginalized in our society. The sight of a homeless man rolling down and up a hill makes the audience wonder. The audience participates in the homeless man's behavior, sharing his daily life and writing a drama by fighting against the society and authorities that oppress the homeless. A participatory performance in the heart of the city gives the audience a chance to experience something different.

Q. This is your third time participating in PAMS. What are your expectations for this year?
A. As in South Korea in the 1980s, various countries around the world have struggled or are struggling against the authorities. Building empathy with global citizens based on common social issues and affirming universal humanity is our primary goal. We hope to use this opportunity to introduce our work to the European market, where street art has been actively performed, as well as to the unexplored regions of South America. On the other hand, is the only street performance at this year's PAMS. We are looking forward to presenting a realistic and immersive work to the audience. - Cheol-sung Lee, Director of CCOT

231 and Seo Namjae, One Two One Two

   Date: October 13 (Fri) 15:30
Venue: Haneul Round Theater (National Theater of Korea)
   Genre: Street theater
   Directors: Lee Seokwon, Seo Namjae
   Showcase Runtime: 25 minutes
   Tour Size: 4 people

231 and Seo Namjae is a duo project by circus artists Lee Seokwon, Seo Namjae. Continuing their exploration of the circus with a desire for new scenes, they are interested in transforming and expanding existing circus objects.

is a work in which two circus artists on stage constantly pursue a state of balance and imbalance, and vice versa, using a circus tool called a "rolla bolla" as a medium. With a title reminiscent of the phrase "Hana dul (one two), hana dul (one two)," the work focuses on the unpredictability of movement between one person's body and two people's bodies, providing an unfamiliar experience and laughter through the two artists' struggle for balance.

Q. What should we look out for on the showcase stage?
A. was born: How much more can two people do together than alone? In response, we transformed and expanded a one-person circus tool, "rolla bolla," so that two people could use it together. Even overseas, where the circus genre is more popular than in Korea, there are not many cases of creating new circus objects and using them in performances. Therefore, we are curious to see how our production will be viewed overseas. At this year's PAMS, we will present a stage version of instead of a street version. By doing this, we hope to see the possibility of theatrical performances and meet more audiences regardless of location. - 231 and Seo Namjae, Seok-won Lee and Namejae Seo

64J, Mok, Lim, Sam

   Date: October 14 (Sat) 16:00
   Venue: Daloreum Grand Theater
   Genre: Street theater
   Directors: CHOI YONG MI
   Showcase Runtime: 25 minutes
   Tour Size: 6 people
   [Go to show information]

64J (joule) is the amount of energy required to move a 64kg object at a speed of 1m/s. The performance group 64J was born out of the question of how to efficiently and fully utilize "64J's work = movement" when creating performances centered around the body. Their main focus is on releasing various constraints, twisting everyday objects into unfamiliar sensations and incorporating them into their performances. Their main techniques are slack wire (tightrope walking) and balance.

The work they present, is a work that incorporates balancing techniques, acrobatics, and hand-to-hand movements with the keyword of balance. The main plot of the work is the process of balance agents sent to the center of the city by the god of balance to find the center between trees and trees. Through their interactions, the Balancers overcome their fears and feel the sensation of being alive, creating an exhilarating sense of tension.

Q. What inspired you to participate in PAMS 2023?
A. 64J's work is based on the idea of awakening the natural human senses through trees, which are the source of life for modern people living in the digital world. As an unfamiliar circus work, it is expected to give a new shock to the audience who are familiar with the existing performance grammar. The 2023 Performing Arts Market in Seoul is the first step in 64J's overseas expansion. I don't think it's possible to go overseas with just one performance. Using PAMS as a starting point, we hope to build a strong network with people involved in the performing arts in Korea and abroad. And through discussions with them, we hope to be able to see the trends and developments in the performing arts world. Park Sang-hyun, Director of 64J
