Performing Arts Market in Seoul (PAMS) has made its comeback. Now in its 19th year, PAMS is arguably Asia's largest international performing arts platform, providing a venue for international exchange for performing arts professionals in Korea and abroad. The long-standing goal of the event is to create a sustainable distribution environment for Korean performing arts and overseas promotion through the exchange of diverse artistic ideas, contemporary issues, expertise and experience. As one of its programs, PAMS organizes 'PAMS Choice'.

PAMS Choice is PAMS' flagship program that showcases outstanding Korean performing arts works and contemporary trends of artists. It supports the presentation of outstanding works selected through a pre-submission process to help Korean performing arts organizations expand their international reach. This year, a total of 10 performing groups were selected to perform on the PAMS Choice stage. We met the teams in three genres: dance, music, and street art. The second genre is music.

With their delicate and sensual music, they bring a young and fresh breeze to the world of Korean traditional music.

groove&'s is a work that captures eight everyday themes in groove&'s unique style in an era that requires comfort and empathy. It depicts our strange yet beautiful everyday life, where no one pushes us away, but we isolate ourselves, find unexpected comfort in things we pass by casually, and take a breather in a dead end. Through this musical portrayal, groove& delivers warm comfort to the audience.

Q. What was the most important aspect of preparing for PAMS 2023?
A. We put a lot of thought into the music selection process. As the years went by, the number of groove&'s songs increased. We tried to think of a piece that would resonate with the public without losing our unique and mysterious color. As a result, we decided to present . For this showcase, we will be joined by bassist Choi Jang-goon as a guest performer. We hope to meet different musicians and audiences through PAMS. We also want to present a time for the audience to feel a new appreciation and awareness of Korean traditional music. - groove& Minjoo Sohn, Ha-kyung Kim

4innori is a Korean traditional music collective consisting of four artists, Seo-kyung Yoon, Young-seop Lee, Jae-ha Lee and Seung-tae Kim. They are characterized by their unconventional use of instruments such as the ajeong, daegeum, haegeum, and geomungo, as well as percussion and sound. The quartet, who are composers and performers as well as audience members, improvise and perform on stage.

4innori's <;Eco·;Yard·;Broad·;Image> is a work that creates a new sound by combining a modular synthesizer, a musical device commonly used in band music, with traditional Korean instruments. A modular synthesizer is a device that modularizes each of the elements that make up an analog synthesizer, and is designed to create unique sounds and music by configuring different modules in the artist's own style. By combining the natural melodies of traditional instruments with modular synthesizers, 4innori has created a musical style that is both traditional and contemporary.

Q. What does 4innori's performance mean?
A. I think it is a strength of 4innori to showcase the improvisation that is the essence of our music and the fusion of traditional music with other cultures without feeling foreign. Through our performances, I think it is very meaningful for diverse audiences in Korea and abroad to imagine the synergy between their own culture and our traditional music, and to arouse their excitement and imagination. Through PAMS 2023, we hope to introduce our music to a wide range of people, regardless of race, gender, or age. We also hope that it will be an opportunity to enter the American stage, which we have not been able to do before. - 4innori Jae-ha Lee

CelloGayageum is a duo formed in 2016 in Berlin, Germany by Austrian cellist Sol Daniel Kim and Korean gayageum player Dayoung Yoon. CelloGayageum combines the repertoire of traditional Korean music, the specificity of traditional instruments, and the inherent charm of the cello with the advantages of different musical approaches. Through the dialog between gayageum and cello, the duo inspires each other to create new music and serves as a driving force for creativity.

is a borderless music project by the ensemble CelloGayageum. Through their respective solo and duo works, the cellist and the gayageum player express the process of blurring the boundaries between two worlds and evolving into a unified world. In doing so, they aim to merge different sounds, genres, times and places, and to explore more creative and experimental forms of expression.

Q. What do you expect from participating in PAMS 2023?
A. The cello and the gayageum are two very different instruments. Some people find the combination of classical and traditional fresh, while others find it unfamiliar. We believe that the only way to change these perceptions is to move them through our performances on stage. Through PAMS 2023, we hope to convey to overseas performers the thrills of the stage that cannot be conveyed through records and music videos. We also hope to be able to present our music at leading festivals such as the WOMAD Festival. - CelloGayageum Sol Daniel Kim, Dayoung Yoon
