Looking for Co-producers, Presenting festivals, Artistic collaborators for Cryptic& Be Being Co-production

Speaker, Claire Moran(Cryptic)

Title: Cryptic& Be Being Co-production
Genre: Multi-disciplinary

Project Introduction
Cryptic is delighted to announce it’s collaboration with British award winning choreographer/director Theo Clinkard and Korean music ensemble Be-Being on a new music theatre work, premiering in spring 2013. The creative, performance and technical team will be drawn from both Korea and the UK. Theo is dance artist and designer based in Brighton, U.K. In 2004, Theo co-founded the ''dancer run'' company PROBE with Antonia Grove. In 2010 Theo created Half-A-Dozen, concealed nows (anag.) during a two week residency at New Zealand School of Dance in Wellington, he premiered a new solo work for Brighton Fringe Festival entitled P I L O T, and in November, at the invite of the British Council, to Chile for three weeks to teach workshops and create a new work and he has recently directed the movement for Ten Plagues, a song cycle written by Mark Ravenhill, performed by Marc Almond at Edinburgh Festival 2010.

Formed in 2007, Be-being is an inspiring Korean ensemble of the highest calibre. Be-being’s collaborative music projects cross-genres, fusing traditional Korean arts with a variety of other elements to create new, contemporary performances. Led by composer Gyu-Young Jang, renowned for his beautifully intricate and complex melodies, Be-being break the boundaries of conventional
music practice, combining music with dance, video, and theatre to create an entirely inter-disciplinary “total art” based on the Korean tradition. Be-Being have an inherently creative approach in bringing traditional music alive within a contemporary setting, which reveals synergies with Cryptic’s own work in visualising and presenting music in new and innovative ways.

Cryptic is looking forward to developing a project with Theo Clinkard and Be-Being which will result in residencies and performances taking place in South Korea, the UK and further afield. Time and preparation is required to deliver quality and innovation and with this in mind we have agreed to premiere in either Korea or the UK in Spring 2013. The creative process will take place over three stages, to enable reflection and constructive criticism throughout the making of the new work. The three stage, residential exchange approach will also have wider reaching benefits for all participants and host countries.

1) August 2011 UK and Korean artists met to exchange ideas. This meeting
coincided with Be-Being’s acclaimed Edinburgh International Festival
performances of Princess Bari: “ inventive, colourful, … witty, surprising and
uninterruptedly entertaining.” The Stage

2) Be-Being will be resident in the UK for four weeks in the summer of 2012.
This is a chance for the dancers and Theo to work closer together with the
musicians. This residency is supported by KAMS.

3) Final creative development stage will take place in 2013 in Seoul when the
UK artists will be resident for three weeks in South Korea, prior to the
premiere of the work followed by international touring.
