Looking for Theatre Presenters, Co-Commissioners
Speaker Andrew Wood(SF International Arts Festival)
Title: Erika Chong Shuch and the ChangMu Dance Company
Genre: Multidisciplinary
Cast: Erika Chong Shuch, Maeja KIM
Project Introduction
Erika Chong Shuch Performance Project and the Chang-Mu Dance Company are collaborating to develop a new evening length work that will be presented in both South Korea and the United States. The new work is inspired by stories arising out of North Korea. The work will weave together traditional Korean dance and Shuch’s signature style of theatrical movement and imagery with stories told in Korean and English. It will premiere in 2013, produced by the SF International Arts Festival and the Chang Mu Art Center.
The work draws on images of North Korean daily life released by Rimjin-gang Magazine, the only organized source of civilian reporting that gains access to the North. The undercover video reporters gather footage through small holes cut in their shoulder bags resulting in tiny fragments of lives revealed. The piece will be directed by Ms. Shuch and ChangMu’s Choi Ji Yeon, with the guidance
and support of ChangMu’s artistic director, Kim Mae-ja. The work will include dancers and designers from both companies and countries.
SF International Arts Festival celebrates the arts through an annual gathering that brings together a global community of artists and audiences. The organization presents and produces innovative projects that are focused on increasing human awareness, understanding and appreciation. We develop long-term relationships with Bay Area artists participating in international collaborative projects and also present ground-breaking artists from around the world.
