The international committee of the Theatre Olympics now has thirteen international members from thirteen different countries, and is located in Athens, Greece. The Theatre Olympics was first held in Greece in 1995, and after that in Japan, Russia, and Turkey. The 5th Theatre Olympics will be held in Seoul, Korea, from 24th September to 7th November 2010.
■ As the center of the arts and performance in the world, the Theatre Olympics has promoted theatrical aesthetics in the 21st century and provided a forum for exemplary performance and the arts. The Theatre Olympics has also presented up-to-date creative performances through the interaction and collaboration between Eastern and Western artists. In short, the Theatre Olympics is a representative performing arts festival in which internationally recognized performing artists, critics, arts executives, and scholars meet together; also, audiences and tourists from the east and the west come to the host city to participate in the festival.
■ The theme of the 5th Theatre Olympics in Seoul is ‘Sarang: Love and Humanity.’ Beyond the limited meaning in the academic area of arts and sciences, through this theme, the 5th Theatre Olympics in Seoul endeavors to emphasize the rescuing of mankind from the suffering of war and famine, and this theme is also an important topic for Koreans themselves, who need to overcome their feelings of national division.
■ Daehangno in Seoul which has about 130 small theatres is a unique performing arts mecca and a creative place for theatrical artists. Through the 5th Theatre Olympics in Seoul, the Korean committee plans to list Daehangno as a special district for theatre and the cultural heritage of UNESCO. In addition, the Theatre Olympics international committee plans to name Seoul as a theatre city.
■ The Theatre Olympics is an international event which overcomes the limitations of ideologies and national boundaries. This event also strengthens the development of the host country's performing arts on the international level. Through the 5th Theatre Olympics in Seoul, the Korean committee will present Seoul as "a city where people want to live;" "a city where people want to visit;" and "a city where culture and the arts are alive." To accomplish this goal, the Korean Committee consolidates the status of Korea as a world cultural power and develops Seoul as a universal ‘culture and the arts’ city focusing on the district known as Daehangno. In addition, by introducing Korean performance culture to the world, the Korean committee will develop Korea as an ideal place for different cultures to interact.
