Designated the “leading festival of Korea,” the Maskdance is gaining worldwide recognition thanks to cultural exchanges and effective support from public and private cultural oragizations. Citizens and tourists have also joined hands to make the festival more interesting. Hosted by Andong, a city rich in the Korean spirit and culture, the festival celebrates the legacy of Joseon Dynasty performance artists who unleashed the emotions that common people harbored deep in their hearts by donning masks and lampooning those who normally had to be revered, such as the aristocracy, scholars and monks. Marking its 13th season this year, the Andong International Maskdance Festival, like the traditional artists it emulates, seeks to make the world a better place to live in through street performances. For the past five consecutive years, the festival has been selected as “the Best Festival” by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. It also has been designated as the “Leading Festival of Korea” for the past two years in a row. One reason it is so popular is the programs that sweep up the audience: parades, dance contests and Daedongnanjang, an original maskdance performance.
