*Company Introduction

Korean Shamanic Folk-Pop
Ak Dan Gwang Chil (ADG7) is a multi-award winning traditional Korean music group, featuring six traditional Korean musicians and three powerhouse female folk singers. ADG7 performs a repertoire from the sacred, shamanic and secular gut (ritual music) and minyo (folk song) traditions of Korea’s Hwanghae Province, today’s western area in North Korea. Their powerful and engaging performance will immerse the audience into a spiritual experience and bring blessings of positive energy originating from the Korean tradition of gut and minyo.

ADG7 was formed in 2015, the 70th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from the Japanese colonial rule. Their music expresses the true meaning of liberation and South Korea’s desire for reunification. They recently won multiple awards including the Award for the Best Group at the 2018 KBS Korean Traditional Music Awards and the Sori Frontier Award at the 2017 Jeonju International Sori Festival. ADGC was also selected as one of the WOMEX (World Music Expo) 2019 official showcase artists.

*Performance Detail

Our purpose of utilizing music from gut (Korean ritual music) and minyo (folk song) of Korea’s western area as the main elements of our concert is to share with the audience the intense energy originating from gut and minyo. In this concert, we present a staged performance of the energy that comes from the traditional ritual of Hwanghae Province in western Korea. The ritual music in this local area is relatively untheatricalized compared to that of other provinces in the country. By doing this, we utilize the musical principles of Korea’s western area to create unique and distinguishable sounds.
