Company Introduction
A multi-award winning Korean traditional percussionist, composer, and ambassador of Honam Province Jeongeup folk music, Kim So Ra is one of the most skilled and prominent janggu (Korean double-headed drum) players in Korea. Kim is known for her genre-bending performances combining Korean traditional sounds with creative, charismatic and modern interpretations.
Kim has performed at WOMEX 2018 and Mundial Montreal 2018 as official showcase artist and Kim’s latest album, A Sign of Rain was nominated as the best jazz & crossover album at the Korean Music Awards 2019.
Performance Detail
The janggu (Korean drum) is a peculiar traditional percussion instrument that attempts to capture the sound of each rain drop by combining five senses. This is me trying to recapture the lost flow and the meaning of nature through the sound of rain, each drop reminding me of the ordinary that passes each day. With an array of instruments that will be complementing the janggu, we will create a spectrum of emotions to connect with the audience. Since the janggu is able to accompany an array of genres of instruments, the musical spectrum is able to be expanded to a wider range. Each performer will present their intention, a display of solos turning into one performance.
