Samilro Theater
Since its opening in 1975, the Myeong-dong-based Samil-ro Changgo Theater pioneered the ’small theater’ movement, essentially having a profound impact on the performing arts community. It once served as a space for creative artists to come together and present their revolutionary works while providing cultural entertainment for the public. Up until the mid 2010s, the theater maintained its existence carrying with it a sense of historical value as an artistic venue. It was able to survive throughout the years of transformation within the urban and art community thanks to the sacrifice and efforts of cultural activists, leading to its designation as a future heritage landmark of Seoul. The theater is now open as an artistic space for the public, theater-goers and artists, while its transforming stage platform was refurbished along with the addition of a studio and gallery, accompanied by a break area. The doors of the theater open once more amid hopes for the once artistically creative hub of passionate artists to transform into a welcoming performing arts platform for everyone.
