Internal & External is a story about three generations of women, a grandmother, mother and daughter, built from the fragmented segments of memory by the choreographer, Sohn In-young, It is about connection, continuity and similarity. Ahn for internal and Bak for External combines to be read as Ahn-pak in Korean. This reveals the theme of the story with much effect. Ahn becomes Ahn , and yet Bak turns into pak and therefore is not exactly the same as Bak . Like the string of Moebius, both Ahn-pak are interconnected. It is about the likeness or similarity that is confirmed through the consistent negation of the mother. The private stories of Sohn In-Young are interlinked in sharp contrast with each other under the subtitles turned into Sigh while doing Laundry , Tear , Expectation and Burden and Song . The connection pierces through the four signs. Private stories are transferred into articles, images, music and body language that emerge into themselves, thereby materializing the theme of the work. With humanity as the basic theme, the past and the present are mixed together and tradition and the present co-exist on the stage. The various stages in life and death, history, a multitude of pop music and images, acting and human temperaments come together in mysterious ways. The work was won "Arts of the Year" Award in 2005.
