The Seoul Metropolitan Theatre took its first step amid expectations from theatrical people and culture circles in 1997.
Facing the 20th anniversary of its foundation in 2017, the Seoul Metropolitan Theatre has developed works based on popularity, artistry and relatability to present fresh plays. Its major works include, and . Inparticular, was selected a sone of the ‘Best Three Plays of the Year in 2009’ while greatly contributing to in forming Seoul Metropolitan Theatre through works that have drawn attention from the theatrecircle and the general public through participatingin the 16th BESETO Play Festival along with the Seoul Performing Arts Festival.
, dealing with the issue of ‘comfort women’, elicited a large response from the country and the USA as it successfully completed invitational performances in LA, Chicago and New York. In addition, it was reported some 50 times in the local media, drawing sincere sympathy and new recognition.
The Seoul Metropolitan Theatre has dedicated itself to bringing verified works to the public in a more friendly way, presenting an annual repertoire that includes classic, creative and family plays. Also, it operates ‘Citizens’ Play’ to expand the base of the play, ‘Sharing Art’ to provide the disadvantaged with another way to enjoy culture, and the ‘Creative Platform’, a project to discover young artists deemed the future of the country and making efforts to take a firm position as a theatre that represents Korea and communicates with its audiences.
