The Association of Traditional Korean Dance was formed in December 1976 by its artistic director, Mae-Ja Kim , for the purpose of representing Korean dance and to reflect contemporary sentiment in the dance. It is thus committed to every area in traditional Korean dance such as shamanism, Buddhism, traditional folk dance and ceremonial royal dance. In order to take into account the demands of the times, the company has been involved in transforming Korean sentiments into a creative process of dance. By adapting dance, poetry and art and creating new poetics in dance over the years, the company has infused an innovative spirit to the world of traditional Korean dance and provided a turning point in its history. Its collaboration with Caroline Calcon in Full Moon (2006) is representative of such a spirit of innovation that lies behind the company. It has performed in over one hundred cities in twenty countries around the world over the past three decades. Its outstanding performance at the Cool New York Dance Festival recently earned it a page in the New York Times.
