*Company Introduction
Artistic director Jeon Misook started her career as a choreographer in 1981 and established her own dance company named after herself in 1998. Jeon’s works are acclaimed for their elaborate structure and composition, dauntless yet delicate development of a subject matter, exquisite musicality, and logical alliance between movements and themes. Her notable works includes ’Are You Happy to See Me?’, ’A Simple-Hearted Dancer’, ’Amore, Amore Mio’, ’What’s Going on’, ’Bow’ and ’Talk to Igor’ which were presented in South Korea, Mexico, USA, France, Sweden, China, Japan, Switzerland, the Netherlands and many other countries.
*Performance Detail
Is ‘bowing‘ merely a gesture of welcome or is there a deeper meaning behind it?
Bow centres around a widespread gesture in Eastern culture, an act full of beauty showing politeness and respect.
Bowing is also a reflection of hierarchy, as its angle depends on one’s social position.
In a performance of deconstruction, the dancers repeat the ritual ad nauseam, turning it into an onerous burden and thus questioning its raison d’etre – an outrageous thing to do in East Asia.
