Company Introduction

Siren eun young jung has been trying to expand the language of feminist art and interested in political and historical moments when personal affect interferes. Developing the “Yeoseong Gukgeuk Project” that explores the history and community of Korea’s all-female musical theatre, she has been working across exhibitions, performances, screening, research and writing. Trans-Theatre, a book that compiles these activities, was published in 2015. Among her performances are (Off)Stage/Masterclass, I Am Not Going to Sing and Anomalous Fantasy. She won the Hermes Award in 2013 and the Korean Artist Prize in 2018. In addition, she will exhibit her new work at the Korean pavilion of the Venice Biennale in 2019.

Performance Detail

Yeoseong Gukgeuk is a Korean musical theatre form once flourished and rapidly declined, where women would play all the roles. One day, a woman in her 30s suddenly abandoned her ordinary life to become a Yeoseong Gukgeuk male-role performer. What is created from the friction between the genre that has almost disappeared and the performer-to-be who has sacrificed her life for the genre? When inaudible murmurings become manifestoes and the experiences of invisible existences become histories, songs are heard. Since the premiere of a Korean version, a Taiwanese version (Taipei biennale, 2017), Japanese version (Yokohama performing arts meeting-TPAM, 2018) and Indian version (Serendipity festival, 2018) have been produced.

Festival Introduction

An international theater and dance festival held every autumn since 2010 at theaters in Kyoto. The festival features a wide-ranging lineup of radical artists from Japan and around the world, presenting works of the theater and dance as well as those of the visual arts, music, design, and architecture.
1. A place for experiments in creativity and exchange
2. Disseminating the Kyoto culture of today
3. Discovering new appeals of the performing arts and finding possibilities for producing the next generation of talent
Kyoto Experiment is organized based on these three approaches, in reciprocal partnerships with both public and private theaters and art centers.
