While taking Korean traditional dance as
his major, Yang Gil-ho also took interest and participated in other areas of
performance such as theatre, mime and performance art in order to expand his
sphere of stage language, or in other words, means of expression on stage. It
led up to his mastering of contemporary dance in order to experience different
cultures of Europe and eventually, he had participated in many works of
renowned dance companies of Belgium and Germany for four years.
In these years, absorbing the different
work processes and the way it creates the depth of a work piece that is very
distinct from Korean methods, he was able to have a first hand experience with
the flow and production method of European contemporary dance. In addition,
during his journey through 35 different countries of Asia, Europe, Africa and
the Middle East, he encountered a way of life in harmony with nature and came
to think about true human nature.
These experiences and thoughts produced a
clear and definite purpose in the direction of creating an art piece, and with
this in mind, he returned back to Korea.
