Detail
"Korean men have always known the
pride of protecting their country by serving in the military. Men who dance can
fulfill their obligations and know GLORY by winning a dance competition. Two
different battles for GLORY live in a single body.
Korean modern dance history has been
recorded to have grown rapidly to the present day since the introduction of the
USA choreographer, Martha Graham’s Technique in 1963. However, there is one
record missing, which is about the exemption from compulsory military service
and the contest of male dancers who are in contact with Korean modern history.
All males, aged between 18 and 35 in South Korea, the only divided country in
the world, must enlist in military service. Since 1983, only one winner of the
Dong-A Dance Competition has been granted a military exemption. Based on this
historical context, this work is on the theme of ’Body Records of Korean
Contemporary Dance History: A Factor of Glory."
