Performing Arts Market in Seoul (PAMS) has made its comeback. Now in its 19th year, PAMS is arguably Asia's largest international performing arts platform, providing a venue for international exchange for performing arts professionals in Korea and abroad. The long-standing goal of the event is to create a sustainable distribution environment for Korean performing arts and overseas promotion through the exchange of diverse artistic ideas, contemporary issues, expertise and experience. As one of its programs, PAMS organizes 'PAMS Choice'.

PAMS Choice is PAMS' flagship program that showcases outstanding Korean performing arts works and contemporary trends of artists. It supports the presentation of outstanding works selected through a pre-submission process to help Korean performing arts organizations expand their international reach. This year, a total of 10 performing groups were selected to perform on the PAMS Choice stage. We met the teams in three genres: dance, music, and street art. The first genre is dance.

Q. What does the title "Zero" mean?
A. The title "Zero" refers to the number "0". Like the number 0, which represents infinity and the beginning, I chose the name "Zero" to implicitly express the process of moving beyond the limits of physical strength to a higher level of freedom. The work is strictly focused on the dancer's body. It also focuses on the question of how the physicality of the body can change and how far it can go. This process takes a lot of energy, so I focused on improving my physical strength. Because it is a non-verbal work with primal imagery, I expect it to resonate easily with people around the world. I hope that PAMS 2023 will be an opportunity to recognize this work.- Hyuk Kwon, Director of COMPANY SIGA

Art Project Bora, Hauntology

   Date: October 12 (Thu) 16:30
Venue: Daloreum Theater (National Theater of Korea)
   Genre: Dance
Artistic Director/Choreography: Kim Bora / Producer: Lee Mijin
   Showcase Runtime: 30 minutes
   Tour Size: 9 people

Art Project Bora is a team of creators focused on contemporary dance. Interested in the phenomenon of the body, their creative process is based on exploring the archetype of the body to discover original images and sensations of transformation. In doing so, they break away from conventional logics and concepts to present works that transcend the boundaries of genres.

Art Project Bora's comes from two homonyms: Hauntologie, which means ghostology in French, and ontologie, which means ontology. While searching for an answer to the question "What makes a dancer dance?", the choreographer discovered a phenomenon where a body that wants to be real meets dance and falls into a state of fiction. Feeling that this phenomenon is like a "ghost" that exists on the border of reality and fiction, the choreographer tried to find the essence of dance in the act of a dancer who continues to dance even in a strange and unexpected state.

Q. Why did you decide to participate in PAMS 2023?
A. is a new repertoire by Art Project Bora, premiered in 2022. Over the past year, we have been promoting the work to national and international performing arts professionals through our performance videos. However, we decided to participate in PAMS 2023 to find a more effective way to promote our work. Through this event, we hope to explore the possibility of introducing our work overseas and expand our network by introducing choreographic works that are different from our existing repertoire. - Kim Bora, Art Director of Art Project Bora

Melancholy Dance Company, <0g (Zero Gram)>

   Date: October 13 (Fri) 17:30
Venue: Haneul Round Theater (National Theater of Korea)
   Genre: Dance
   Choreographer and Director: Cheol-in Jung
   Showcase Runtime: 35 minutes
   Tour Size: 9 people

Founded in 2016 by choreographer Cheol-in Jung, Melancholy Dance Company views the world itself as art, creating a time for diverse audiences to empathize with the world we live in. The company's works are based on the theme of human life, using variations in speed, rhythm, and weight to convey subtle messages about human history.

The work <0g> is inspired by the punishment of Sisyphus, an ancient Greek mythological figure. Sisyphus was punished for deceiving the gods by pushing a large boulder to the top of a mountain. When the boulder reaches the top, it rolls back down and returns to its starting point. Finding our lives in the repetitive act of falling that cannot be escaped, this work depicts the process of finding meaning in life through seemingly meaningless actions. To this end, the work utilizes the physical principle of "free fall" in its movement and presents various images with dynamic movements derived from it.

Q. <0g>, a performance to be presented at PAMS, how is it different from your previous performances?
A. <0g> was premiered in 2018 as part of the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company's "Step Up Project. This time, PAMS will present <0g>, which has undergone three evolutions since its premiere, compressing the 60-minute work into a 30-minute performance. For this performance, the number of dancers has been increased from four to five to better convey the work's message. We are excited to be the first to present the new version of the work to overseas performers. We hope to see how different overseas performers view our work through this performance. - Cheol-in Jung, director of the Melancholy Dance Company
