Buckchon Changwoo Theater is a small theater built by HEO Gyu(1934-2000), a visionary of madanggeuk, the beginning of Korean theater, changgeuk that is pansori performed on stage, and traditional Korean festivals.
Opened in 1993, it is a valuable cultural space l aced with the artist’s creative spirit and tenacity, affection and devotion for Korean traditional art, and has become a prominent traditional arts theater that presents various performances including plays, changgeuk, pansori, and traditional music. "Bukchon" refers to the district surrounding Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces during the Joseon Dynasty where noblemen resided and associated with many artists in artistic exchanges. "Changwoo" is a term used to all artists ever since the Goryeo Dynasty. Bukchon Changwoo Theater is the only exclusive small theater devoted to traditional arts in the Bukchon area where the changwoos of today perform new styles of traditional arts and performances that mingle the traditional and the modern.
The theater is located next to Changdeok-gung Palace, and features the dynamic and beautiful Korean traditional arts through the "standing stage for traditional music" as well as special performances for all those who have come to visit Bukchon and Changdeokgung Palace.
