The musical ‘Interview’ is about the psychological game between Eugene Kim, an author of a bestselling detective novel, and Sinclair Gordon, a would-be writer. As Sinclair aspires to be a writer, Eugene gives him a will written by a serial killer who tried to take his own life and asks him to write a novel based on the will. After reading the will, Sinclair writes a story called ‘The Monster in Me’. He then asks Eugene if his novel ‘Death of the Doll’ is based on the story of Joanne Sr. The two men talk about Joanne who died ten years ago and they try to find a link between her death and the recent serial killer. Such a process of investigation unveils what Sinclair suffers from: dissociative identity disorder.

This thriller constantly keeps us in suspense through its densely placed moments of realization. For example, Sinclair turns out to be Matt Sr, Joanne’s younger brother. Matt’s multiple personalities become clear. The truth about Joanne Sr’s death is revealed. Through Matt with dissociative identity disorder, the performance focuses on the reason behind the murder coming from child abuse rather than on the killer’s identity. The connection between dissociative identity disorder and child abuse isn’t something new. Nevertheless, goes beyond such a cliché thanks to its strengths as a small-scale musical. The actors playing the role of Sinclair instantly express his five personality states that change constantly. The performance’s solo piano music helps the audience concentrate on the character’s inner side.

After its showcase in 2016, ‘Interview’ was presented in Seoul three times. It also met audiences in Tokyo, Kyoto and New York. The role of Eugene, who leads the story’s narration and adds to the depth of the musical, was played by Lee Geon-myung (who performed during the premiere), Min Young-gi, Park Geon-hyung and Kang Pil-seok. The role of Sinclair, who suffers from dissociative identity disorder, was played by eight performers including Cho Sang-woong, Kim Jae-beom, Kim Su-yong and Cheong Dong-hwa, thus showing a wide spectrum of acting. The role of Joanne, who appears in the memory of Eugene and Sinclair, was played by ten performers. This role also served as a gateway for young actresses to start their acting career. Chu Jeong-hwa, who had been an actress, served as the writer and director of ‘Interview’. She won the Prize for the Best New Director at the 2017 Korea Musical Awards.

Review

The thriller that keeps the audience focused unveils the inner side of a poor adult who grew up without healing his deep scars.
- Choi Yun-seon, reporter of News Culture

A sensitive piano tune is more powerful than ten lines. Indeed, the music makes the performers’ emotional acting even more appealing.
- Shin Won-seon, reporter of Metro

In ‘Interview’, the performers’ great acting is effectively absorbed into the musical’s themes, story and music, thus making the audience totally immersed.
