“It received very positive reviews from the audience. A harmony is achieved between the traditional and the contemporary in a new and impressive way, and the dancers have very impressive technique, like athletes.”

  • Director
    PARK Soon Ho
Choreographer Park Soon Ho approaches traditional culture from a contemporary perspective to express archetypally Korean sentiments. Park has served as director of international artist-in-residence programs and has collaborated with artists in various genres. His official invitation to the 2014 internationale tanzmesse nrw in Germany received much attention. Park has also been invited to various international festivals, including the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, and received the honors of Choreographer of the Year and the Best Dance Award from the Korean Association of Dance Critics and Researchers. Park Soon Ho derives inspiration for contemporary movements from traditions such as pansori (traditional form of musical storytelling) and percussion.
“Tension and Relaxation,” inspired by a pansori piece titled “Jeokbyeokga,” derives rhythmic and dramatic movements from changing beats. “Pattern and Variable,” which blends Asian sentiments with African dynamics, was produced as part of the Asia-Africa Dance Exchange Program at the Seoul International Dance Festival, and was enthusiastically received. Park’s recent exploration of sports and games, such as judo and the game of go, particularly the fine sense and insight required for creative departures from strict rules, and delicate and dynamic movements based on careful calculations, led to the creation of “Judo” and “Bow.”
