Performance Info

I’ll float a boat again on the rolling waves of my spirit,
In the deep, deep-dark sea of my spirit…

‘Han’ refers to a unique Korean emotion situated deep inside the heart. The performance presents this concept of ‘han’ from diverse perspectives. The meaning of the word ‘han’ is a feeling of resentment against unfairness, or a mind stiffened up by bitter sorrow. Therefore ‘han’ is often collocated with the verb ‘resolve.’ In fact most of the traditional Korean dances were created to resolve ‘han’ deep inside the human hearts. The production presents the characteristics of the inner meanings traditional Korean dance possess onto the stage, while reflecting each individuals to the medium ‘boat’ in order to resolve the sense of ‘han’ engraved in your hearts through beautiful movements.

Choreographer’s Note
Hye-rim Jang is an elegy expressing the sorrow of human emotions, consisting of joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure, presented through dance as if it were a song. This work was inspired by witnessing so many individuals who could not escape from the feeling of emptiness despite material wealth, making me envision a sailing boat floating alone on the open sea.
“How can I express the sorrow deep inside the heart that plunged to the depths, battered by the twists and turns of life?”
This inner question spurred me to gradually conceive the choreography, as if to write a poem, line by line on white paper, comparing the soul of an individual to a sailing boat. Through the discussions about each of individual sorrow with the dancers, we tried to voice the pressures on us; we wept and sang together. As a result of this constant effort to convey individual sorrows through dance and movement, was created.
Through this work, I hope the audience can simply weep and sing along with the dancers following the blowing wind and the waves of the sea; and, ultimately, have time to float the boats inside them once again.

Company
Ninety9 Art Company
In 2014, the company was founded with the purpose of focusing on creating new contemporary Korean dance that could bridge the traditional and the modern. Without the distinction of traditional Korean dance, contemporary dance, and ballet, passionate dancers came together and formed this new company and named it ‘Ninety9’; meaning 1% of inspiration will be completed by 99% of effort. By drawing out what already exist inside us through the form of dance, the company aims at communicating deeply with its audience. It hopes to grow like a tree: the higher it reaches, the deeper its roots take hold. Since its establishment, Ninety9 Art has staged , and , and in 2016 it was invited to perform at the Critic’s Choice for Best Choreography and to perform at the Changmu International Arts Festival. Ninety9 Art is participating in 2016 SPAF and 2016 Performing Arts Fostering Program, and will be vigorously presenting its works to the audience.
