Performance Info
Traumatic memories of shame\Characters in the performance look back on irrecoverable cuts that run deep in their hearts, caused by post-traumatic stress disorder and absence of shame - an essential part of human emotion. Through direct and indirect approaches, dancers express these feelings that have already planted themselves in our hearts, yet whose recollections are denied and rejected out of fear. Shame, a must-have emotion for society, and trauma in our memories are presented in abstract movements in this new ballet production.
Choreographer’s Notes
Human beings are selfish.
We are so from birth.
Although it is natural for us to live instinctively and pursue our own happiness, the reason it seems selfish is because we consider the pain and sorrow of others irrelevant and ignore them.
I believe it is my duty as a human being ‘to share the fundamental human emotions’; of joy, anger, sorrow, pleasure. Although every action or outcome is the result of a definite cause, this specific cause can sometimes be unclear in the fog of society. As no one bears responsibility for the outcome, a feeling of despair becomes overwhelming.
However, what actually makes us feel greater despair is our society in which a series of accidents or incidents that happen to other people are considered to be irrelevant to ourselves. In other words, only the desire for one’s happiness and achievement is reckoned important.
The reality of today is the absence of lawful punishments of people responsible for the incidents; the organized complements of the system to prevent these incidents are not being implemented righteously. We live on and they are hushed up and forgotten...
We need to have at least a minimal amount of interest about the things that happen in our lives. We need to share and shout out to the world about these incidents from deep inside our hearts. Our cries may be small, but it’s time that each of our individual voices should resonate within the society at large.
Company
Kim Yonggeol Dance Theater
The company was founded by Kim Yong-geol, former lead dancer at the Korean National Ballet and soloist at Ballet de l’opera national de Paris, in France. Based on the strict ‘Basic movements’ required in ballet, it focuses on going beyond the movements and expressions unique to ballet and on expanding the dancers’ motions. On the basis of a bold experimental spirit, the company endeavors to go beyond the ordinary and to have its audiences deeply moved inside their hearts. Also, by including phenomena of modern society in its performances, the company contributes in expanding the direct and indirect influences of the art of dance across the society by providing opportunities to reflect on human nature.
