About performance

Taking an actual murder case of Maria(Hong-rye Byun) in 1931 in Busan as the motif, the piece poses a question to human desire and avarice. As a news article aptly described, this incident was "just like a detective novel," it is depicted in a way that evokes silent film techniques, a widespread form of popular culture from that era. The most authentic form of expression at the time will take different nuances for today’s audience. The play’s fictional aspect is amplified by emphasizing the feel of ’re-presentation’ appropriately done by the actors.
Similar to silent movies, the actors stage the life of Hong-rye into play and use melodramatic style and accent of the 1930’s. They assume the role of silent film narrators and engage in the story in various ways, making the lines of a character delivered by several people. The sound effects are achieved by actors on stage, using vinyl, wood, papers and many more, like when the post synchronization of silent films.

Synopsis

A Japanese aristocrat and company owner Dae-gyo, his wife, her lover Jeong-Sang, and a young Korean man Gu-Il - the hell-scape created by these characters will unfold in a new way that mixes theatre and cinematic techniques. Film acting methods of the 1930’s as well as silent and black and white film techniques follow the perspective of a detective on investigation while crossing between the past and present. While tight roping on levels of film in a play and a play in film, <At that time, Byeonhongrye> shows a liberating and exciting use of techniques and leads the audience to witness a modern hell-scape and to become the very investigators of the truth.
