SADARI Movement Lab is venturing to create a mixed vocabulary of traditional European and Korean performing arts!

About performance
Comparatively studying Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream based on Korean traditional ‘Bong-san mask dance’ and Italy’s ‘commedia dell’arte,’ the piece tried to create an innovate contemporary take of half-masked play. The plot is kept the same, yet it is brought into our own spatial setting and the comedic characters are staged with different movements and forms along with masks. Just as our ancestors did, the performing space will be in a yard on straw mats. A variety of spatial fantasies are generated in a limited space, similar to commedia dell’arte’s pageant wagons. The narrators lead the drama, whose lines, instruments and singing speak for the characters or designate spaces. The signs and agreements in characters’ movements are what create the space.

About company
SADARI Movement Lab
Since its foundation in 1998, SADARI Movement Lab has been working with passion based on strong methods and artistic value. It has been creating a unique vocabulary on stage by comparing human’s inherent passions to natural dynamics such as element, matter, colors, light, animals and music, and translating them into not only physical movements but also sound, objects, masks, puppets or video. Today, SADARI Movement Lab metonymically brings 21th century new media and scientific effects into a theatrical language to create all the more progressive and forward-looking performances.
Major works include: <Woyzeck>, <The Maids>, <The Human Comedy>, <The Trial> and <The Walworth Farce>.

  • Director
    Do-wan Im
Founding member and president of SADARI Movement Lab established in 1988, Do-wan Im studied theatre at Seoul Institute of the Arts and started his career in performing arts based on mime, with Hong-young Yoo, artistic director of the company since 1985. He took some time in France and got inspired by ‘spirit of freedom contained in poetic bodies’ at the Jacques Lecoq International School of Theatre. Since then, he has been working on movement education and performances.
Im said: “I seek a poetic language in my works. Sometimes you look at a painting and gradually crossover to your own space. There is a type of shows that inspire the audience’s world of imagination like that. It is possible through poetic bodies.” He especially explored unusual objects, sound, colors and light in many works, asserting an experimental approach to the language of performance. He is acclaimed for having paved the way into a new genre of movement theatre and showing the true possibility of new language on stage.
