Performance Info
The dance of man-about-town and the music
of the noble meet. Korean-style merrymaking for the joyful culmination!
About the performance
Dongnaehakchum is a dance that used to be performed by Korean men-about-town, of which the style is refined, simple and elegant. Most Korean folk dance is based on traditional religious rites, highlights humor and satire and depicts ordinary citizens’ hardships. However, Dongnaehakchum does not have such implications. Instead, here, dance is an end in itself. Bach’s music, which was at the peak of the Baroque period, seems to have been improvised but its principles are kept unconsciously. This element can be also found in Dongnaehakchum. The performance reinterprets the dance of Eastern noblemen and the music of their Western counterparts mixed in a multifaceted way. Also, the style is full of sophisticated and skillful elements. At the same time, the two genres from different historical periods merge into each other.
Intention of Choreography
Under the theme of noblemen’s merrymaking
culture, the performance Noleum – Hang Out finds its motif of dance and music
(two central elements of a dance performance) in how Eastern and Western people
hang out. In this context, the choreographer explores Dongnaehakchum, dance by
Korean noblemen (especially men about town) and Baroque music (led by Western
noblemen) and reinterprets these dances in an attempt to develop it into
contemporary merrymaking elements all along with the audiences.

the Trisha Brown Dance Company in New York, choreographer Jae-hyuk Jung founded

has created sophisticated works by focusing on the most essential and
fundamental movements. The Company’s works are characterized by repetitive
movements intended to skillfully combine two contrasting elements:
classicalness and contemporariness. The Company’s performances allow the
